Snoqualmie Valley Railroad Bridge 31.3

Loading concrete

There was no road to the site so all construction materials had to be moved in by rail, including concrete.  The concrete used for the footings and foundations was carried in three-yard hoppers on a self-propelled rail car called a lowrailer.  A large crane was required to lift the 6,000 pound loaded hoppers.

A large crane had to be moved to the construction site to help unload materials.  There was no road or highway so rock (railroad ballast) was placed on top of the railroad track allowing the rubber-tired crane to slowly back into the site.  This 65 ton capacity "American" crane was wider than the track! Speed was restricted to 3 miles per hour.
