Snoqualmie Valley Railroad Bridge 31.3

Vince vibrates concrete

The footing form work was filled with a lattice work of steel reinforcing rod, including vertical sections intended to tie into the bridge abutments.  The form was then filled with a structural grade of concrete thoroughly vibrated into place.

Samples of materials used in the bridge construction, including steel and concrete, were sent to a testing laboratory to ensure they met specification.

The crew had to work quickly because concrete took over an hour to transport to the site.  Optimum strength can only be reached if the concrete is poured within two hours.

The bridge abutment forms were constructed of wood and steel and carefully braced so they would withstand the tons of concrete while it was setting.

A large crane flew  hoppers of concrete a distance of 80 feet to reach the abutment on the west side.  Over 40 cubic yards of concrete was required to fill the abutment forms.

The work crew was able to enjoy one of the best views of any construction site in King County!
